Road safety

The road safety refers to the methods or measures used to save road users from being seriously injured. The road users typically include pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, vehicle passengers, and the passengers of on-road public transport. Basically, road safety is defined as the strategy to ensure that in the event of a crash, the impact energies remain below the threshold likely to produce either death or serious injuries. According to the world health organization report, 85% of global crashes occur in low and middle-income countries. According to the same report, India is on the top of the list where 110,000 people are killed every year due to road accidents, and China is on the second where 87,000 people are killed every year.

Challenges involved in road safety

There are a lot of challenges involved in the road safety such as the followings:

  • The absence of knowledge about traffic rules.
  • The absence of over bridges, underpasses, and alternative roads of villages.
  • The shortage of traffic signals.
  • The absence of high way petrol routine checks for alcoholic peoples to prevent them from driving.
  • The lack of modern technologies.
  • Lack of safe and secured transportation for schools.
  • The absence of emergency response systems.
  • The unavailability of speed management systems.
  • The absence of traffic engineering.

Solutions to such challenges

The challenges related to the road safety can be solved by following certain strategies. We can increase the knowledge about traffic regulations by making traffic rule thought in schools. The government should build over bridges, alternative roads, and underpasses where the main roads touch village roads. There is a vital need for traffic signals on squares to avoid a traffic jam on these places due to the crossing. To avoid accidents due to drunk peoples, there should be inspectors checking alcoholic people.
Nowadays, there are a lot of the new technologies present in the world that can increase road safety such as ADMS, Lidar, etc.  and prevent traffic accidents. There should be the speed management systems installed along the road to direct peoples to move with the required speed. Governments can increase emergency response systems to avoid serious injuries and death. Universities should support engineering opportunities aimed at developing a well-managed traffic system to avoid serious injuries and death caused by accidents.

Different technologies to enhance road safety

Statistics show that almost 1.25 million deaths occur every year in the world. This number will continue to increase if road safety measures aren’t taken. New technological innovations are being announced every day to improve road and vehicle safety. Some of these technologies include the followings

LiDAR (light detection and ranging or light imaging, detection and ranging) is the remote sensing method that uses pulsed laser light to measure the distance of the target objects. LiDAR measures the distance of the target object by illuminating it with a pulse laser light. By measuring the reflected pulse with a sensor, the difference in laser return time and wavelengths, it would be possible to make the 3D representation of the target object.

LiDAR system

LiDAR systems are extensively used in enhancing road safety. Traffic controllers use LiDAR devices that measure the speed of vehicles moving way above the authorized speed. Lidar systems are also used in automated cars to detect nearby objects by producing 3D maps of surrounding vehicles.

Nowadays, some companies are developing self-driving vehicles by using Lidar technology, that provides a smarter and safer solution.

ADMS stands for Achieved Data Management System. ADMS works with an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) that is used to store, manage and archive the network data. ADMS uses the data collected by ITS devices to improve transport operations, planning and decision making at a minimal cost. ADMS has the ability to use real-time data and histories of travel times and conditions to determine the best routes to travel.

ADMS has such features as optimizing traffic signals and ramp meters, giving the future forecast, long-term planning, performance measurements, benchmarking and reporting.

Traffic Surveillance cameras

Traffic surveillance cameras are parts of an intelligent traffic system. They provide the possibility of video surveillance of the running objects on a road.

Traffic surveillance cameras

Traffic surveillance cameras have advantages such as.

Enforce traffic laws:

These cameras are installed on specific places to record and enforce red-light laws by capturing violation of moving vehicles and issuing tickets for them.

Encourage safe driving:

Visible surveillance cameras are usually installed at intersections to encourage safe driving and discourage violations.

Valuable data:

Traffic surveillance cameras provide valuable data on traffic flows on roads that can be used by the department of transportation.

Most promising technology

The most promising technology to increase the road safety is the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) which provide AI technology. This technology contains maps, sensors and Artificial Intelligence techniques to control your vehicle. If there is any hurdle around you, this system detects that hurdle, create a proper response according to this hurdle and automatically save you from any serious damages or injuries.
