1) Introduction to Drones
What is a drone?
Technically speaking the term drones refers to an unpiloted or unmanned aircraft also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle. This unmanned aircraft is remotely controlled by a software.
Drones can be used in various different fields and domains. Here are some applications for drones:
- Inspection of oil pipelines or covering of large areas such as geographical surveying
- Security purposes
- Military use such as target practice
- Emergency case ( carrying medical kit and other emergency supplies)
There are plenty of different types of drones and unmanned aircraft; however, they are similar in the way they work and function. A drone is composed of two major parts, the aerial vehicle itself and a control system. The aerial vehicle is composed of different technologies and devices. The materials that the flying drone is made out of are highly complex composites which are low in weight and can absorb vibration. However a drone is not only made out of materials, it also contains other parts which enables it to fully function, the nose of the unpiloted aircraft is a major part of the drone, it is composed of different infra-red cameras, GPS and other sensors.
Types of Drones
As stated before, drones can be used in various different fields and applications, so how many types and drones are there?
There are lots of ways to classify drones; however, it is safe to put them into categories based on their sizes:
- Large sized Drones: these type of drone are obviously the largest type of drones in terms of size, they are usually used in the military. Probably one of the most famous military drones is the MQ-1 Predator.
- Medium sized Drones: these type of drones are smaller than military these drones are generally used to cover large areas such as geographical surveying or combating wildlife poaching.
- Small sized Drones: this type of drones is considered to be the smallest in size compared to the previous other types of drones, these drones are usually quadcopters, and one of the most famous small-sized drones is the DJI Spark drone.
2) Drones that can Detect Shooters
School shooting and mass shooting, in general, is a huge problem in the world and especially in the US. According to an analysis compiled by “Everytown” between January 2009 and July 2015, there had been at least 134 mass shootings and it seems that this epidemic is not stopping any time soon. That’s why engineers and developers have come up with a solution in order to stop mass shootings from occurring. This solution is using Drones that can detect people carrying weapons. Originally these types of drones have been used for military purposes only but recently police and other security facilities have also been using such a technology,
A drone that can detect weapons is very similar to a regular drone. In terms of appearance they are much alike, and in the way they function. They are also extremely similar as they both pretty much have the same components more or less. They both have motors, cameras, GPS and other technologies and devices however a drone that detects weapons and guns has few more things that can allow it to properly function and do its job. So how can a drone detect weapons and guns?
3) How can drones detect weapon carriers?
There are three major ways for a drone to be able to easily detect guns and weapons, here are they:
GPS and custom AI algorithms
A drone could easily detect a person carrying a weapon or a shooter using a technology that is basically a GPS and an AI custom algorithm. The AI Algorithm can detect bursts and explosions coming from guns and using the GPS the drone detect the location of the shooter.
Using a millimeter-wave radar drone can detect people carrying weapons without even shooting, all thanks to the millimeter waves that this type of radar that was originally made for military purposes only. The radar that is attached to the drone, sends waves towards a person for example, every metallic object that that person is carrying will resonate with a very distinct frequency using a computer that recognizes frequency patterns of different weapons it is possible to detect hidden guns or weapons in general.

It is also possible for a drone to detect weapons and even dangerous chemicals using a new technology that is called SpectroDrone system. A SpectroDrone system is basically a drone that is equipped with different kinds of laser beams, a high-resolution camera, spectrometers and complex algorithms. The drone pinpoints and analyzes threats from a long distance reaching up to 1.8 miles and sends images back to its controllers in real time. The controllers then, simply analyze the images and decide whether there is a potential threat or danger or there is not.
In conclusion, drones are still considered somewhat to be a new technology. They still have their own challenges and drawbacks; however, they definitely have lots of advantages and benefits to offer. Thanks to a great amount of time, effort and money being invested, researchers and engineers are developing and updating the way drones work and function in general. That is why they are being used in various different fields and domains that no one ever thought that they would even come remotely close to it. Therefore it is reasonable and acceptable that in the near future, drones will be used more often and become a common tool in detecting threats and dangers especially weapons and guns.
