Designing and Prototyping a Highly Accurate Golf Rangefinder

Case

Our client who owned a private golf course requested the designing a customized Golf rangefinder. A rangefinder is a device that measures the distance of a target from the observer and these rangefinders are used by Golfers to have a clear idea about the distances of the target which is generally a flag. There are currently different kinds of rangefinders for golfing in the market including the GPS and the laser rangefinders.

Requirements

 The client had requested for the following requirements

  1. Accuracy: 4cm in 50m (0.08%)
  2. Working during the day and under the sunshine
  3. Cost-effective
  4. Good accuracy

Solution

In order to satisfy the above conditions, we reviewed all the existing solutions in the market to find the best technology. We even tested the infrared and supersonic devices. While these options were cost-effective, their accuracy was not good enough and therefore they were rejected owing to the lack of the required accuracy. Finally, a laser solution was considered for the design. For flat areas, this solution was the best option as it gives the exact yardage to any target in sight. It even gives the yardage to the flag if it is on a green area and this is something that can be hardly achieved by a GPS solution.

The other advantage of laser rangefinders is that you do not need too much experience to use them. You just need to point them to the point that you find its range and click a button.

Laser rangefinders for golfing are simple to set up and put together whenever needed. It uses highly accurate laser technology to calculate the distance between the device and the target.

Despite the above advantages, this solution has its own disadvantages including recognition of the target during the daytime, or the need to keep it on the target to get an accurate result.

In the final solution, all the above problems were resolved and the device was built and successfully tested.

Description

The final prototype met all the expectations. It had a good effective range and was capable of range-finding with the requested accuracy of 0.08%.
