Designing and Prototyping a Coffee Leftover Dryer

Case

We were asked to design a portable device for drying of coffee beans leftovers and wastes. They were to be used for making such products as Food spices, coffee flour, fuel pellets, composting material, chocolate made with cascara (the dried skins of coffee cherries), etc.

Requirements

  • Cost-effective and low production cost
  • Having a minimum of ports for easy maintenance
  • Power 220 Volts
  • Bin capacity 18 liters

Solution

The design included a simple system for stirring the coffee inside the container and 3 elements around the enclosure for heating it from outside. The electronic control board was placed in the container cap.

A spiral bade was used to move the pieces of coffee to the top of the container and they dropped down to the bottom of the dryer bin. During this process, the existing water in the pieces was evaporated and all the constituents were dried. The process was controlled by the electronic board.

In order to meet the requirements, the bin was made from stainless steel and a gear motor was used for its operation.
