Augmented Reality

It is a superior version of reality where direct or indirect live view of physical, real-world environment can be augmented by using computer-generated perceptual information and integrating the digital information with the user’s environment in real time. The main objective of the Augmented Realty is to provide a rich audio-visual experience. It is basically the integration of graphics from the television screen or computer display with the real world.

Augmented Reality

The term “Augmented” was first coined by Thomas Caudell 1990. In 1998,    a yellow appearing in a football game in Television was the first commercial application of AR technology.

The snapshot lenses and Pokémon Go game are some examples of Augmented Reality technology.

Difference between AR and VR

According to industry experts, the two hottest technologies which are likely to have a big impact on enterprises mobility are Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Both AR and VR are related visualizing technologies. AR shows the digital information of the physical world whereas VR shows completely the digital environment.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is more immersive than Augmented Reality.  Using the Augmented Reality, the user will touch the real world and interact with the virtually created object, whereas I Virtual Reality the user is in a virtually created world and completely isolated from the physical world. The Virtual Reality provides an immersive experience to the user by crafting a virtual world which is graphical and digital whereas the Augmented Reality enriches the experience through adding virtual levels by including graphics or images as a new layer of interaction with the real world.

With VR the user can bring the focus of the user on the content. There is no other distraction in between. It is a kind of completely immersive method of storytelling.

How Augmented Reality works

The Augmented technology works based on the following approaches.

SLAM: It is one of the common and effective ways to bring the virtual image over the real world objects. It is not a software or not any specific algorithm but it is an approach to solve the complex AR simulation Problem. It localizes a sensor with respect to the surrounding but at the same time, it maps the structure to the surrounding. So by using the SLAM approach, it solves the localization and mapping problem.

Recognition Based: Recognition based AR uses the camera to identify the visual marker /object to identify the QR code or NFC code to showcase an overlay. The marker is then sensed by the device. This Marker method based AR uses a camera to distinguish the marker from the real world and also calculates the position and orientation of the object. Once it recognized, the object is converted into the 3D version of the corresponding object.

Location Based: It is also known as marker-less Augmented Reality. The data about location and Augmented Reality visualization are activate based on the input of GPS, digital compass, velocity meter and accelerometer.

Some AR applications

  • Splitter Critters

It is a puzzle game where we can tear up the alien world with the swipe of the finger and rearrange to guide the citrus back to the spaceship.

  • GIPHY world

This AR app allows you to add GIFs and Pictures to the real world.

  • Ghost snap AR horror Survival

This app turns the world into a horror game. While holding up the device, we can see the surrounding area turning into a dark and creepy place which fills with the evil supernatural. It gets an even worse effect when we use a headphone which gives a terrifying sound.

  • Complete Anatomy

It gives a detailed 3D model of the human body with a high fidelity structure. This App displays the anatomy model with Augmented Reality providing the user with more immersive experience.

Complete Anatomy

  • Holo

Using this app allows us to put a range of holographic models and pictures into a video. Each hologram can be resized and rotated if they are in the same room as you are.

Holo App

  • Augment

It allows us to visualize a 3D model in Augmented Reality in the real environment. There are already so many models inbuilt in apps and we can add our own models which can be further rotated, scaled, moved, etc.

  • Ink Hunter

It is an AR app that helps us to preview what a tattoo might look like in our skin. This app works by placing the drawing of a marker on the body and place the device camera on the body. The app then allows the dynamic preview of the design.

  • Sun Surveyor

This is a useful app for photographers to find the best location for getting a perfect shot. It also provides the exact location of the sun and moon at any particular moment by displaying the Augmented Reality projection of sun’s and moon’s path.

The Future of AR application

In 2017, Apple released a lot of AR apps. All of these apps were using AR kits. Initially, it was difficult for the first-time user to understand how AR worked, also, the UI was not clear enough even for experienced AR users. After some time, Apple and Google released some guidelines for using AR apps. But again it created a blind spot for the users. As a result, a UI kit was developed to resolve this problem. While this kit was sophisticated for designers to use but it could also be useful for them because they could find suitable UI solutions. For better understanding augmented apps, it is necessary to improve the following categories:

It is the most difficult moment for a first-time user. So, an AR app should definitely allow a user to know some information about the environment.

Once the scanning is completed, the user can place the 3-D content. There are different interaction patterns which are suitable for different situations.

Manipulate and Tips

It is about playing with an augmented object. Apple and Google tried to define some unique patterns. However, it sometimes requires unique interactions, so it is necessary to introduce them gently.

A well-known game named – Pokemon Go is a location-based game. In future, there will be more different types of location-based games.
